Elon Musk has said he is "disappointed" by the financial aspects of a newly passed domestic policy bill backed strongly by President Donald Trump and passed by Republicans. Trump has dubbed the legislation the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act.”

Musk, who recently stepped away from activities at the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE)—a government spending reduction agency—stated:

“I’m disappointed by this massive spending bill. It increases the budget deficit rather than reducing it, and it undermines the work the DOGE team has been doing.”

Musk’s comments hint at growing disagreement with President Trump, a major proponent of the large spending package. The bill is still awaiting Senate approval. Key provisions include:

  • An extension of Trump’s 2017 tax cuts

  • Increased funding for border security

  • Work requirements for Medicaid recipients

  • Elimination of tax credits for clean energy initiatives

The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) estimates that the bill, particularly its tax-related measures, would increase the federal budget deficit by $3.8 trillion by 2034.

Speaking to CBS News, Musk remarked:

“I think a bill can be big, or it can be beautiful — but I’m not sure it can be both at the same time. That’s just my personal opinion.”

In the early months of the Trump administration, Musk actively pushed through deep budget cuts across various government agencies through his DOGE team — actions that stirred concern among Democrats and even some Republicans, and faced numerous legal challenges.

  • Currently serving as CEO of Tesla, SpaceX, and social media platform X, Musk has indicated that he is gradually reducing his direct involvement in government affairs.
