Tarique Rahman’s Clear Message to the Caretaker Government: National Election Must Be Held by December
[Dhaka, Bangladesh – May 25, 2025]
BNP’s acting chairman Tarique Rahman has stated, "BNP demands that the national election must be held by December of this year." According to a report by BBC Bangla, he emphasized that BNP, along with its allies that have been active on the streets, continues to extend full support to the caretaker government to bring about necessary reforms in the civil administration and law enforcement for the purpose of holding national elections.
Speaking virtually from London at the anniversary discussion event of the National People’s Party (NPP) held in Dhaka on Sunday, Mr. Rahman said:
"Political parties have met with the caretaker government and have once again demanded a clear date and timeline for the national election. Therefore, under the leadership of an esteemed, competent, and qualified individual as head of the interim government, the people of the country should soon witness the most free and fair national election in the nation's history."
Calling for constructive criticism of the government, Tarique Rahman said:
"Whether it is an elected government through direct votes, an interim government, or a caretaker administration — citizens must continue to hold the government accountable through constructive criticism. The people are not subjects of governmental mercy. The government is obligated to meet the rightful demands of the people. There is no room for ego, pride, or resentment in governance."
Highlighting the current economic condition of the country, the BNP leader said:
"An atmosphere of uncertainty in politics and the economy is causing unrest among people from various professions and classes. As a result, people from all walks of life are taking to the streets with their demands. Unfortunately, at this moment, no one is there to listen to their voices."
Addressing the need for reforms in the caretaker government, Tarique Rahman noted:
"There is no such thing as a small or large reform. Reform is a continuous process, necessary for the state and political landscape. However, practical reforms are more important than theoretical ones."
He further stated:
"This government is not accountable to the people. Therefore, from a moral standpoint, the government must make its plans transparent to the public. No plan can be effective or sustainable if the people are kept in the dark or political parties are left in uncertainty."
