Elon Musk-Owned Satellite Internet Service ‘Starlink’ Launched in Bangladesh
The globally renowned satellite-based internet service provider Starlink, owned by tech entrepreneur Elon Musk, has officially launched operations in Bangladesh. The announcement was confirmed by the company this Tuesday morning via a post on social media platform X (formerly Twitter).
Starlink is starting its journey in Bangladesh with two service packages: Starlink Residence and Residence Lite. The monthly cost for these packages is BDT 6,000 and BDT 4,200 respectively. However, customers will need to pay a one-time setup equipment fee of BDT 47,000.
According to the Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS), the service comes with no speed or data limits. Individual users will have access to unlimited data at speeds of up to 300 Mbps.
Customers in Bangladesh can place orders starting today. Fayez Ahmad Tayyab, Special Assistant to the Chief Advisor of the Ministry of Posts, Telecommunications, and Information Technology, confirmed the launch of Starlink’s operations in Bangladesh. He said that on Monday afternoon, Starlink representatives informed him via a phone call, and the official announcement followed the next morning on their social media handle.
He added that the initial rollout includes two packages—Starlink Residence and Residence Lite—with monthly fees of BDT 6,000 and BDT 4,200, respectively. To use the service, users must purchase the setup equipment priced at BDT 42,000 (note: there is a slight discrepancy with earlier figure of 47,000). The service imposes no data cap or speed restrictions, allowing speeds up to 300 Mbps.
“From today, customers in Bangladesh can start ordering Starlink service,” said Fayez Ahmad Tayyab. “With this, the Chief Advisor’s expectation of launching the service within 90 days has been successfully realized.”
He further mentioned that although the service is relatively expensive, it presents a high-quality and uninterrupted high-speed internet solution for Bangladesh’s premium users. In particular, NGOs, freelancers, and entrepreneurs in areas lacking fiber connectivity or fast internet access will benefit significantly from this service.
Fayez Ahmad Tayyab noted that the Chief Advisor congratulated all involved in making this initiative a success.
With its entry into Bangladesh, Starlink has tapped into a new market in South Asia, opening up opportunities to deliver high-speed internet access to remote and underserved regions of the country.
