Former U.S. President Joe Biden is set to return to public life less than 100 days after leaving office. On Tuesday, in a major speech in Chicago, he will speak out against former President Donald Trump's controversial Social Security policies. The speech will focus on protecting Social Security and opposing proposed cuts to the program — marking Biden’s first major public address since leaving the presidency.

From Political Silence to Public Spotlight Again

Biden has mostly been spending his time in Delaware. Once a week, he travels to his Washington office and is occasionally seen around Wilmington. His few public appearances so far have included a Model United Nations conference in New York, a St. Patrick’s Day brunch in Delaware, and receiving an honorary award at a labor union convention.

He is also working on a book and has been holding conversations with recently released Israeli hostages and their families.

Disappointment at the End of Presidency and a New Beginning

Many of Biden’s former allies and donors partially blame him for Trump’s return and have expressed frustration over his sudden withdrawal from the public eye. Biden has not yet begun fundraising for his presidential library, which has surprised many.

Analysts believe his planned foundation will likely be a smaller-scale platform operating over the next 10 to 15 years, unlike the expansive initiatives launched by Bill Clinton or Barack Obama.

Biden Aims to Be a Bold Voice Against Trump

Biden has already begun criticizing Trump’s economic policies, especially the “Liberation Day” tariffs. In one of his speeches, Biden remarked, “During my presidency, the U.S. had the strongest economy in the world.”

At a recent International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) conference, he stated, “That economy is now being squandered — utterly, needlessly.”

Divided Reactions Among Democrats

Some Democrats are eager to see Biden more engaged in public life again, while others believe he should remain in quiet retirement. However, sources close to Biden suggest he plans to stay involved in shaping the party’s direction — not as a candidate, but as a guiding force.

Democratic National Committee Chairman Ken Martin praised Biden, saying, “No Democratic president has invested more in the party’s infrastructure than Joe Biden.”

The ‘Nostalgia Biden’ Effect

Though some former aides were disheartened by the way his presidency ended, a sense of nostalgia is growing — especially when contrasted with Trump’s aggressive political comeback.

Delaware Governor Matt Meyer said, “Joe Biden has always been someone who brings people together. Seeing him now labeled as a divisive figure feels strange to us in Delaware.”

Time will tell how actively Biden re-engages in the political arena. However, many believe his voice, experience, and legacy as a former president could play a critical role in navigating the current political landscape.
