Bangkok, April 3, 2025 — The 6th BIMSTEC Summit, bringing together seven countries from South and Southeast Asia—Bhutan, Myanmar, India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Bangladesh—has kicked off today in Thailand. BIMSTEC (Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation) aims to foster collaboration in various sectors, including security, development, and economic cooperation across the Bay of Bengal region.

The BIMSTEC Secretariat is based in Bangladesh, and it was inaugurated by former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on September 13, 2014.

During today’s dinner, India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Thailand’s Prime Minister Petongtorn Shinawatra, Bangladesh's Chief Advisor Professor Muhammad Yunus, Bhutan’s Prime Minister Dasho Tshering Tobgay, Nepal's Prime Minister Sharma Oli, and other leaders from BIMSTEC member countries were present.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, speaking about his upcoming meetings with the leaders of BIMSTEC countries, said, “I will be meeting with the leaders of the BIMSTEC nations to strengthen our cooperation further, in the interest of our people.”

It is also expected that Modi will have a sideline meeting with Chief Advisor Professor Muhammad Yunus.

This 6th BIMSTEC Summit, held after a gap of three years, is expected to play a significant role in enhancing security, development, and cooperation among the South and Southeast Asian nations.
