During a military training operation in Lithuania, a U.S. armored vehicle (M88A2 Hercules) was involved in an accident that resulted in the deaths of three U.S. soldiers, with one more still missing.

The incident occurred on March 25 when the vehicle sank in a marshy area near Pabradė. After a six-day long rescue operation, the vehicle was recovered early on the morning of March 31.

The Intense Rescue Operation: The 63-ton armored vehicle was trapped four meters underwater and about two meters in mud. It was retrieved through the combined efforts of the U.S. and Lithuanian military forces, navies, and civilian agencies.

Military Statement: The U.S. Army confirmed that the fallen soldiers were members of the 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, and were deployed to Lithuania as part of Operation Atlantic Resolve. Their identities have not yet been disclosed, as family members are still being officially notified.

Expressions of Grief: U.S. Army Chief General Daniel R. H. Driscoll stated, “We will not stop until we find the fourth soldier. There are no words for this grief.” Major General Christopher Norrie, Commanding General of the 3rd Infantry Division, said, “These soldiers were not just members of the military – they were part of our family. This grief has touched all of us.”

Lithuanian Response: Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda expressed his condolences on X (formerly Twitter), writing, “I deeply mourn the news of this tragedy. On behalf of the Lithuanian people, I extend sincere condolences to the United States and the families of the deceased.”

The recovery operation utilized advanced resources and joint cooperation between multiple agencies.
