January 12, 2025 — Indian star pacer Jasprit Bumrah is likely to miss India’s group stage matches in the upcoming Champions Trophy 2025 due to swelling in his back. He will undergo a three-week rehabilitation process at the National Cricket Academy (NCA), with further assessments needed to determine his match fitness.

According to a report, Bumrah has been asked to report to the NCA, where his recovery will be monitored. "He (Bumrah) will go to the NCA for rehabilitation. The initial report indicates he doesn't have a fracture but has swelling in his back. The NCA will monitor his recovery, and he will stay there for three weeks. Even after that, he will have to play one or two matches, even if they are practice games, to check his match fitness," a source from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) said.

The BCCI selection committee, which met in Mumbai on Saturday to announce the national squad for the T20 series in England, was briefed on Bumrah's fitness status. The Indian selectors are now deliberating on whether to include Bumrah in the 15-member squad for the Champions Trophy or place him in the tournament's reserve players list.

It is noteworthy that the final date for submitting a provisional squad for the 2025 Champions Trophy is January 12, 2025. However, the BCCI has reportedly asked the ICC for an extension.

Bumrah’s back injury first came to light during the fifth and final Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. He captained India in the Sydney Test and bowled in the first innings but did not bowl in the second innings. During the match, images of Bumrah getting into a car and heading to a nearby health facility for tests were widely circulated.

The upcoming 8-team Champions Trophy will start on February 19. The two semi-finals will be held on March 4 and 5, and the final match will take place on March 9.

The tournament will be played in a hybrid format, with India’s matches scheduled in Dubai and all other matches in Pakistan.

India, placed in Group A, will face Bangladesh on February 20, Pakistan on February 23, and New Zealand on March 2. Meanwhile, Group B consists of Australia, England, Afghanistan, and South Africa.
