Rutte Backs Trump’s NATO Criticism, Highlights Europe’s Support for U.S.-Led Military Operations
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte expressed support for President Donald Trump’s criticism of NATO, while emphasizing that European allies have made significant contributions to U.S.-led military operations despite frustrations within the alliance.
Speaking on Fox News’ Special Report with Bret Baier on Tuesday, Rutte said he “completely” backed Trump’s position on NATO burden-sharing but noted that the concerns raised should be viewed as isolated cases rather than a reflection of the alliance as a whole.
Rutte pointed to Europe’s logistical and operational support during military actions involving Iran, stating that thousands of sorties were launched from European bases. He highlighted that around 500 U.S. aircraft took off from American bases in Italy in support of the operation, calling it a “massive” contribution.
He also cited assistance from other NATO members, noting that between 4,000 and 5,000 sorties were conducted across Europe. According to Rutte, Romania’s capital, Bucharest, even reduced commercial air traffic because its airport was being used as a tanker facility for the mission.
His remarks came as Trump renewed calls for NATO allies to increase their defense spending and shoulder a greater share of the alliance’s collective security responsibilities.
