Millions of people across the United States are preparing for a severe winter storm that could bring the heaviest snowfall and coldest temperatures in a decade. The National Weather Service (NWS) reports that the storm, which began in the central U.S., will move eastward, and its effects will be felt for the next several days.

States like Kentucky and Virginia have declared a state of emergency, and winter weather warnings have also been issued for cold conditions in areas like Mississippi and Florida.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has stated that the extreme weather is caused by swirling cold air around the Arctic, known as the polar vortex. The agency predicts that "some areas may experience the heaviest snowfall in the past decade."

AccuWeather's forecaster, Dan Depdowin, said, "This could be the coldest January since 2011." He also mentioned that "temperatures could stay significantly below historical averages" for almost a week.

The snowstorm in the central U.S. may cause "major disruptions to daily life" and "dangerous or impossible driving conditions," according to NWS forecasts. Parts of Kansas and Indiana could see at least 8 inches (20.3 cm) of snow.

Drivers in the Midwest are being urged to take special precautions due to the extreme cold and road closures caused by the snowstorm. "Travel could become extremely hazardous due to the snowfall," warned NWS.

Rain and ice are expected across Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, and western Virginia. As the storm moves eastward, millions more Americans are expected to face record-breaking temperatures.

Cities like Washington D.C., Baltimore, and Philadelphia are preparing for snow and ice accumulation from Sunday to Monday. Virginia could see snowfall of 5 to 12 inches.

In addition, severe thunderstorms may occur in parts of Arkansas, Louisiana, and Mississippi on Sunday.

Private meteorologist Ryan Mauve warned, "This could be chaotic, potentially disastrous. We haven't seen anything like this in a long time."

Due to potential flight disruptions, American, Delta, Southwest, and United Airlines have waived change fees for passengers.
