In the election of the new Speaker of the United States, newly elected President Donald Trump played a crucial role in securing the victory of Republican candidate Mike Johnson. Trump personally called two Republican members, Ralph Norman (South Carolina) and Keith Self (Texas), who were initially opposed to Johnson, persuading them to support him.

During a phone call in between a golf game on Friday afternoon, Trump emphasized the importance of Republican unity, stating that voters would not tolerate division. As a result, Louisiana Congressman Johnson was elected as Speaker with a narrow margin of 218 votes.

Trump's Role in Johnson's Victory

Arizona Congressman Andy Biggs told CNN, "Johnson couldn't have won without Trump's support. His decision influenced us significantly."

Challenges Ahead and Future Prospects

Despite his election as Speaker, Johnson faces challenges. The narrow Republican majority in the House of Representatives and the lack of support in the Senate could make it difficult for Trump to pass legislation.

Even after becoming Speaker, Johnson has faced demands from some members of the House, such as Chip Roy (Texas) and members of the staunchly conservative Freedom Caucus. However, Johnson has not made significant concessions and has not promised changes in key committee leadership positions.

Regarding the Speaker election process, Trump said, "We need to keep our party united. Supporting Johnson is crucial for the party."

Trump's Influence and Johnson's Promises

In his first speech, Johnson praised Trump's role and said, "His support was a great help to me."

In the House, Johnson has pledged to maintain his power by reviewing "the functioning of government agencies" and investigating "the misuse of government against the people."

Test of Republican Unity

After the election, analysts are saying that keeping the Republican Party united under Trump's leadership will be a major challenge. While Trump's influence may be sufficient to maintain party unity, retaining this majority in the 2026 midterm elections will be the real test.
