Vienna, January 3: In Austria, a small liberal party unexpectedly withdrew from coalition talks on Friday, throwing the government formation process into disarray. The talks were held without the far-right Freedom Party (FPO), despite its significant vote share in the September national elections.

The unexpected move by the Neos party has raised doubts about the government formation process and has strengthened the position of the Eurosceptic, Russia-aligned FPO. FPO, which secured nearly 29% of the vote in the September 29 elections, stated that its exclusion from the government formation talks was "unconstitutional" and that an attempt to form a "coalition of the losers" was underway.

Neos party leader Beate Meinl-Reisinger announced at an urgent press conference, "We no longer wish to continue talks for a three-party coalition." She complained that discussions with the OVP and SPO had made insufficient progress. Furthermore, proposals for harsh reforms, such as tax cuts and raising the retirement age, were put forward but had not garnered sufficient support.

The discord between FPO and other parties, coupled with uncertainty in the negotiation process, has created a politically unstable environment in Austria. The two main parties, OVP and SPO, now hold a slim majority by a single seat, but the absence of one lawmaker could dramatically alter the situation, which is now seen as almost insurmountable.

Meanwhile, FPO immediately launched an attack on Chancellor Nehammer, labeling the situation as a "lost coalition of the German model." FPO stated, "This is what the people want! It's time, Mr. Nehammer, for you to resign."

This political instability has created a significant challenge for the formation of Austria's government, making the future political landscape of the country even more complex.
