Explosion Devices Linked to Pickup Truck Attack in New Orleans, FBI Identifies ISIS Supporter as Suspect
New Orleans: On New Year's Day, a pickup truck was driven into a crowd on Bourbon Street in New Orleans, killing at least 15 people and injuring many others. The FBI is investigating the attack as a "terrorist act" and has stated that it does not believe the driver was solely responsible.
The FBI has identified the suspect as a Texas resident and an army veteran. According to officials, the attacker was killed in a firefight with police, and an ISIS flag was found in his truck at the time of the attack. He had also made several videos before the attack, in which he stated that he had joined ISIS.
Additionally, the suspect rented the vehicle through a company called Turo, and explosive devices associated with the attack were reportedly made at an Airbnb, which was rented "for this purpose," according to Louisiana's Attorney General in an interview with NBC.
The attack took place in the French Quarter, less than a mile from the venue where the Sugar Bowl football game was scheduled. Following the attack, the annual college football game was postponed until 4 p.m. (ET). The city is also set to host the Super Bowl and the Mardi Gras carnival later.
