Ireland's President, Michael D. Higgins, in his final Christmas address, highlighted the suffering of Palestinians in Gaza and other war-torn regions worldwide. Describing Gaza as the "epicenter of agony for children and their families," he cited devastating figures: 45,000 people killed, including 17,000 children, with an estimated 11,000 individuals likely buried under rubble.
He condemned the global community's silence on the mass killing of civilians and stated, “The silence of many influential figures, who overlook widespread human rights violations against civilians, grants impunity to perpetrators clearly imposing collective punishment on civilians, particularly through starvation that disproportionately affects women and children.”
Meanwhile, diplomatic tensions between Ireland and Israel have escalated. In response to Ireland's support for Palestinians, Israel has closed its embassy in Dublin.
