Fall of Assad's Government: Qatar Reopens Embassy in Syria After 13 Years

After 13 years, Qatar has decided to reopen its embassy in Syria. On Wednesday, just three days after the dramatic fall of Bashar al-Assad's government, Qatar announced its decision to restore diplomatic presence in Damascus.

Majed Al-Ansari, spokesperson for Qatar's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and advisor to the Prime Minister, told the state news agency QNA that the embassy would reopen as soon as the necessary arrangements are completed.

While Doha has not specified a timeline for reopening its embassy, it stated that the initiative reflects Qatar's unwavering support for the brotherly people of Syria, who strive to rebuild their nation on the foundations of justice, peace, stability, and prosperity.

In 2011, Doha severed diplomatic ties with Damascus and closed its embassy following the outbreak of Syria's civil war. Since then, Qatar has not reestablished relations with the Assad government.

A Qatari official told Reuters on Friday that Qatar would send its first official delegation to Damascus on Sunday to meet with Syria's interim government. The discussions will focus on reopening Qatar's embassy and enhancing the distribution of humanitarian aid.

The official added that Qatar is committed to taking the necessary steps to reopen the embassy and expanding its humanitarian assistance efforts.

Meanwhile, Mohammed Al-Bashir has assumed office as the head of Syria's new interim government. He has called on Syrian refugees in various countries to return to their homeland. In an interview with Italy's Corriere della Sera, Al-Bashir stated that the rights of all Syrians, regardless of their community, will be upheld.

He remarked, "Syria is now free. It has regained its glory and dignity. Therefore, I urge all Syrian citizens abroad to return home."
