Amid the ongoing crises in the Middle East, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken has initiated diplomatic efforts focusing on Syria and Gaza. In an effort to end violence in the Syrian conflict, Blinken arrived in Aqaba, Jordan, on Thursday, where he met with King Abdullah II. During his trip, Blinken will also visit Turkey, where the discussion will include issues surrounding the change in Syria's government and the protection of minorities.

Meanwhile, National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan will meet with Israeli leaders in Israel before traveling to Qatar and Egypt. Both Blinken and Sullivan are working to bring an end to the 14-month-long war in Gaza and secure the release of those held captive in the region.

The Biden administration’s diplomatic steps aim to create a new environment in the Middle East following the downfall of Iran-backed Hezbollah and Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. While it remains unclear how successful these efforts will be, these steps will influence Biden’s legacy in the final months of his administration.

Additionally, Hamas is pressuring for a ceasefire in Gaza and the release of prisoners, while Israel maintains its right to continue the war.
