New Developments in Syria Will Strengthen Iran – Ayatollah Ali Khamenei
Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has stated that the downfall of former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad was the result of a joint conspiracy by the United States and Israel. In a speech delivered in Tehran on Wednesday, he remarked, "There is no doubt that what happened in Syria was a U.S.-Zionist conspiracy."
Khamenei further pointed out that, along with the United States and Israel, one of Syria's neighboring countries also played a clear role in the events. However, he did not explicitly name the country. Among Syria's neighboring nations, Turkey has long been supporting certain opposition forces in Syria.
Additionally, Khamenei claimed that Iran’s intelligence services had been warning the Syrian government for the past three months about threats to their security, but Damascus did not take appropriate measures. The rapid advance of Syrian rebels into Damascus ultimately led to the fall of Assad's regime.
Since the onset of the war in 2011, Iran and Russia had been staunch supporters of Assad’s regime. However, following Assad’s fall, Iran asserted that its strength would not be diminished. Khamenei stated, "The more pressure is applied, the stronger the resistance will become; the more crimes are committed, the more motivated we will be."
Iran has also expressed hope for maintaining its relations with Syria and has called for the formation of an inclusive government representing all segments of Syrian society.
