Former President John Mahama Wins Ghana's Presidential Election, Set to Lead Again
Accra: Former President John Dramani Mahama has emerged victorious in Ghana's presidential election, reclaiming the country's top office. His main rival, incumbent Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia, conceded defeat and congratulated Mahama on his win.
At a press conference on Sunday, Bawumia said, "The people of Ghana have voted for change, and we humbly accept their decision."
The election, held on Saturday, marked the end of two terms in power for the New Patriotic Party (NPP). Under the leadership of current President Nana Akufo-Addo, the country faced one of its most severe economic crises in decades. Ghana struggled with high inflation, rising debt, and a devalued currency, severely damaging the country’s economic stability.
Bawumia called Mahama's victory a "decisive win" and personally congratulated him via telephone. According to internal NPP calculations, Mahama's National Democratic Congress (NDC) party also emerged victorious in the parliamentary elections.
Mahama, who served as Ghana's president from 2012 to 2017, confirmed receiving Bawumia’s congratulatory call on social media platform X. In front of the NDC party headquarters in Accra, Mahama’s supporters celebrated the victory with cheers and jubilation.
During his campaign, Mahama promised to "rebuild" the country in various sectors and called on younger voters for their support. The economic crisis in Ghana, despite its leading position in gold mining and cocoa production, was the central issue of this election. Due to economic instability, Ghana was forced to seek a $3 billion loan from the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
Mahama’s victory is seen as a beacon of hope for the people of Ghana. At 65 years old, the seasoned leader has returned to lead the nation once again, signaling a new chapter in Ghana’s political landscape.
