Interim Bangladeshi Government Plans National Government Without Awami League
Dhaka- Reports from Dhaka indicate that Bangladesh's interim Chief Adviser, Dr. Muhammad Yunus, is contemplating the formation of a national government that excludes the Awami League. The Economic Times has highlighted this potential move in the wake of Sheikh Hasina’s government’s fall and the escalating political crisis in the country.
National Government Excluding Awami League
Dr. Yunus is reportedly considering a government comprising opposition parties, including the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and Jamaat-e-Islami, among others, with no representation from the Awami League. Speculation suggests Yunus might offer select Awami League members the option to defect and join the new administration.
In a previous interview with the Financial Times, Yunus labeled the Awami League as a “fascist party,” stating, “There is no place for Sheikh Hasina's fascist Awami League in Bangladesh’s politics.”
Discussions on Minus-Two Formula
The Economic Times report also mentions Yunus and his supporters are exploring the implementation of a "Minus-Two" formula, excluding both the Awami League and BNP from power to establish a fresh government. However, this approach has sparked concerns, as it may involve anti-India political groups.
Strain in Bangladesh-India Relations
The report notes a growing strain in Bangladesh-India relations, with New Delhi expressing dissatisfaction over the Bangladeshi government’s silence regarding attacks on the Hindu community in India.
National Dialogue Excludes Awami League
Dr. Yunus recently hosted a national dialogue that excluded the Awami League and its ally, the Jatiya Party. Legal Adviser Dr. Asif Nazrul, addressing reporters, stated, “Despite our differences, all political parties except the fascist Awami League and its allies participated in the dialogue. We are united in preserving Bangladesh’s independence and sovereignty.”
Upcoming Visit of Indian Foreign Secretary
The dialogue comes ahead of a visit by Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, scheduled for December 9 in Dhaka. The visit is expected to address security and diplomatic issues between the two nations.
Political Tensions Rise
Dr. Yunus’ initiative has sparked significant debate and tension in Bangladeshi politics. The success or challenges of his plans remain to be seen, as the nation watches closely.
