Beijing: Under Xi Jinping's leadership, the ongoing purge within China's People’s Liberation Army (PLA) has intensified, with new developments shedding light on the political and military shifts within the country. The latest reports reveal that Lin Xiangyuan, the commander of the Eastern Theater Command, which oversees Taiwan, the Taiwan Strait, and the East China Sea, has died by suicide. He had been responsible for overseeing operations related to Taiwan and was allegedly under investigation for corruption.
In addition, Miao Hua, a member of the PLA's Central Military Commission (CMC) and head of the political department, has been dismissed for "serious breaches of discipline." China's Defense Minister, Dong Jun, is also facing corruption investigations. Dong, who was appointed to the position in December, follows in the footsteps of his two predecessors, who were also removed from their posts on similar charges.
Xi Jinping’s Intent Behind the Purge: Protecting Loyalists?
Corruption has long been an issue within China’s military system, with reports revealing that bribery and other financial corrupt practices were common among senior PLA officers seeking promotions. However, experts believe that Xi Jinping’s ongoing purge is not just about eradicating corruption but also about ensuring loyalty to his leadership. His famous assertion that "the guns should always be in the hands of loyal party members" reflects his strategy of consolidating power within the Communist Party, rather than prioritizing national security.
Lack of Experience in the PLA Due to Purge
The purge has led to a noticeable lack of experienced personnel within the PLA. Both the Navy and the Air Force are witnessing a shortage of experienced captains and pilots. While military modernization efforts continue, doubts have emerged about the PLA's effectiveness due to the lack of necessary skills for warfare. Analysts suggest that this shift is preventing China from engaging in large-scale military conflicts, despite showing strength through threats towards Taiwan. While China has showcased military might in the region, it is carefully avoiding direct confrontation.
PLA as a Political Tool
Xi Jinping’s military purge and focus on loyalty have turned the PLA into a political instrument rather than a purely military force. With loyalty to the Communist Party prioritized over military competence, concerns are growing over the PLA’s readiness and capabilities. This strategy, while solidifying Xi's control, has led to questions about China’s ability to effectively respond to military challenges in the future.
