Turkey's President Erdogan Calls for Complete Reform of the United Nations

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has stated that the United Nations needs to be completely reformed, emphasizing that the world cannot be left to the mercy of the five permanent members of the Security Council.

Speaking at the TRT World Forum in Istanbul on Friday, Erdogan criticized the five permanent members of the Security Council. He argued that the future of 194 countries should not be determined by the whims of one or more permanent members.

Erdogan, a long-time critic of the Security Council’s structure, reiterated his stance, asserting that the world is much larger than the five countries that currently dominate global decision-making.

Citing ongoing humanitarian crises around the world, Erdogan highlighted the weaknesses of the current global system and stated that each crisis presents an opportunity for justice, peace, stability, and security to be enhanced.

Additionally, he mentioned that Turkey has continued to provide assistance to the people of Gaza and Lebanon, amidst the ongoing conflicts there.

Reuters reports that Turkey has previously discussed a potential ceasefire with Hamas and recommended steps to advance the process. Erdogan’s comments underscore the importance of unified action among Islamic countries in the region, especially in light of the ongoing conflicts in Gaza and Lebanon.
