Washington: U.S. President-elect Donald Trump has issued a stern warning, stating that 100% tariffs will be imposed on BRICS nations if they do not abandon their de-dollarization initiatives. Trump's warning comes amidst ongoing discussions regarding the de-dollarization concept, proposed by Russia and China.
The BRICS bloc—comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa—is currently regarded as one of the most powerful economic alliances in the world. Recently, the group has expanded to include countries from Africa, Latin America, and Asia.
In a post on his social media platform Truth Social on Saturday, Trump wrote,
"BRICS nations trying to reduce reliance on the dollar while we sit and watch? That’s not happening anymore."
This week, Trump also announced that a 25% tariff would be imposed on goods imported from Mexico and Canada if they fail to address immigration issues.
Analysts believe Trump's hardline stance could escalate tensions in international trade and increase instability in the global economy. BRICS representatives have yet to respond to Trump's statement.
Background:
The BRICS de-dollarization proposal aims to reduce global reliance on the U.S. dollar in international transactions. Russia and China are spearheading this initiative, challenging the U.S.'s economic and political dominance.
Experts fear that Trump's warnings to maintain America's economic supremacy could worsen diplomatic relations between BRICS nations and the United States in the future.
