Bangladesh Expresses Deep Concern Over Flag Desecration and Effigy Burning in Kolkata

Dhaka – Bangladesh has expressed deep concern over the desecration of its national flag and the burning of an effigy of its chief adviser, Dr. Muhammad Yunus, during a violent protest organized by the Hindu group Bengali Hindu Jagaran in Kolkata. The protest took place on the afternoon of November 28, with demonstrators crossing police barricades and reaching the premises of the Bangladesh Deputy High Commission.

The protesters set fire to the national flag of Bangladesh and burned an effigy of Dr. Yunus, drawing strong condemnation from the Bangladeshi government. In a statement issued on Friday (November 29), the Ministry of Foreign Affairs called the actions "outrageous" and urged the Indian government to take necessary steps to prevent such incidents in the future and ensure the safety of Bangladesh's diplomatic staff in India.

The statement highlighted the gravity of the situation, noting that the violent protests outside the Bangladesh Deputy High Commission had created an atmosphere of insecurity for the diplomatic staff. Although the situation is reported to be under control, concerns remain about the safety of all members of the mission.

The Bangladesh government reiterated its strong condemnation of the flag desecration and effigy burning and called on India to take appropriate action to prevent such acts of violence. It also urged India to ensure the security of the Bangladesh Deputy High Commission and other diplomatic missions in India, including both diplomatic and non-diplomatic personnel.

The statement further emphasized Bangladesh’s firm stance against any form of violent activities and stressed the importance of maintaining diplomatic decorum and respect for national symbols.
