Pakistan's PTI Withdraws Protest Campaign Amid Crackdown
Islamabad – Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), the country's main opposition party, has withdrawn its protest campaign in Islamabad after three days of demonstrations. The decision was announced in a statement by the party's central media cell, citing widespread arrests and crackdowns as the reason for halting the movement.
In the statement, PTI said, "The government's brutal actions and its plans to turn the capital into a slaughterhouse by targeting unarmed civilians forced us to temporarily suspend our peaceful protest."
The protests initially began on November 24, with PTI leaders and supporters marching toward Islamabad, demanding the release of former Prime Minister and PTI chairman Imran Khan, the resignation of the government, and the repeal of the 26th constitutional amendment.
Upon reaching the Red Zone and D-Chowk areas of Islamabad, the protesters faced heavy crackdowns by police, Rangers, and military personnel. The violent clashes led to the deaths of six individuals, including members of PTI and security forces.
Amid the chaos, PTI's top leaders, including Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur and Imran Khan's wife, Bushra Bibi, were forced to leave the protest site.
Later on Tuesday, PTI activists and supporters gathered in Islamabad's D-Chowk, where fresh clashes erupted with security forces. Following these events, Pakistan's Prime Minister's political adviser Rana Sanaullah announced that over 500 PTI members had been detained.
In light of these developments, PTI's media cell issued the statement suspending the protest campaign, emphasizing their commitment to peaceful demonstrations while condemning the government's actions.
