Part of: US Midterm Election 2026
November Elections Could Reshape Political Power Across 15 State Legislatures
Control of 15 state legislative chambers is up for grabs in the November 3 midterm elections, with results potentially affecting state policies on housing, education, taxes and immigration.
As the United States prepares for the November 3, 2026, midterm elections, attention is turning not only to Congress but also to state legislatures across the country.
A report published by Stateline on October 16 said control of 15 state legislative chambers could change hands. These contests matter because state lawmakers help shape policies that directly affect residents, including school funding, housing, taxes, public safety and some immigration-related measures.
Reuters reported on October 19 that voters will elect governors in 36 states and choose state legislative representatives in nearly every state. Republicans currently control approximately 55% of state legislative seats nationwide, while Democrats hold about 43.8%, according to Ballotpedia figures cited by Reuters. The remaining seats are held by independents or other political groups.
State legislatures play a different role from the U.S. Congress. They pass state laws, approve budgets and oversee state agencies. Their decisions can influence local education systems, transportation funding, housing programs and public services that families rely on.
The November elections will also determine control of the U.S. House and Senate. Republicans currently hold a narrow majority in the House and a 53–47 majority in the Senate, Reuters reported. Democrats would need a net gain of four House seats and four Senate seats to take control of both chambers.
The outcome of state legislative races will vary from state to state. Voters should check their local ballot, candidates’ published positions and official election information before casting a vote.
