Biden Administration Cancels $47 Billion in Ukrainian Debt Amid Ongoing Conflict with Russia
The outgoing Biden administration has decided to forgive nearly $47 billion in debt owed by Ukraine, a move that is expected to provide significant financial relief to the war-torn nation. This decision, which amounts to approximately 5.64 trillion Bangladeshi Taka based on an exchange rate of 120 Taka to 1 USD, is seen as a critical step to support Ukraine’s economic stability while it continues to battle Russia's aggression.
Biden Administration Cancels $47 Billion in Ukrainian Debt Amid Ongoing Conflict with Russia
Matthew Miller, spokesperson for the U.S. Department of State, announced on November 20 that the outgoing officials were doing everything they could to strengthen Ukraine in its fight against Russian forces. The move is part of broader efforts to assist Ukraine amid the ongoing war and economic crisis.
The debt forgiveness comes ahead of the inauguration of newly elected President Donald Trump, whose potential policy shifts could limit U.S. assistance to Ukraine. President Joe Biden, in his final days in office, ordered the debt cancellation as a strategic effort to support Ukraine’s survival in the face of Russia's invasion and to help mitigate the economic hardship caused by the war.
Miller confirmed that the debt forgiveness is being carried out following legal procedures, but warned that the U.S. Congress could still block the initiative if it chooses to do so. This decision follows a previous funding bill passed by Congress in April, which allocated nearly $9.4 billion in forgivable loans to Ukraine. Since Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the United States has provided Ukraine with $60 billion in aid, covering military, economic, and humanitarian support.
The proposal to forgive this debt has sparked debate in Congress, with Republican Senator Rand Paul strongly criticizing the move. However, the majority of senators from both parties continue to support U.S. assistance to Ukraine.
Experts believe that this debt cancellation will play a vital role in Ukraine’s economic management, further strengthening its military readiness. It also sends a strong message of unwavering U.S. commitment to Ukraine, signaling continued support for the country’s resistance against Russian aggression.
The Biden administration’s initiative is expected to reinforce Ukraine's efforts to repel Russian forces and bolster its resilience during the ongoing conflict.
