Biden and Xi Meet in Lima: Discussions on Cybercrime, Trade, Taiwan, and Russia

On the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum in Lima, Peru, Chinese President Xi Jinping and outgoing U.S. President Joe Biden held a two-hour meeting on Saturday. During the talks, Xi expressed his commitment to working with the incoming U.S. administration led by Donald Trump.

The meeting covered a range of critical international issues, including cybercrime, trade, Taiwan, the South China Sea, and relations with Russia. This marked the first meeting between Biden and Xi in seven months.

“China is ready to work with the Trump administration to improve bilateral relations,” Xi said.

Analysts believe the Trump administration’s approach may introduce new challenges and opportunities in U.S.-China relations. There is considerable speculation about how the new administration will handle sensitive issues such as the South China Sea and Taiwan, where a tougher stance is anticipated.

The discussion between Xi and Biden during the APEC summit is seen as a significant indicator of the future trajectory of U.S.-China relations.
