New Exchange of Fire in the Gulf Tests Fragile Iran Ceasefire
A fragile ceasefire in the Middle East came under renewed strain on Saturday after Iran launched ballistic missiles and drones toward Bahrain and Kuwait, according to Bahraini authorities. The incoming projectiles were intercepted, and Bahrain urged Tehran to halt attacks against Gulf neighbors amid escalating regional tensions.
Iran said the strikes targeted U.S. military assets in Bahrain and Kuwait, describing them as retaliation for recent American attacks on surveillance facilities on Qeshm Island and near Sirik. Tehran argued that the U.S. strikes violated the ceasefire agreement.
Later on Saturday, the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) announced that American forces had shot down two Iranian attack drones over the Strait of Hormuz, saying the drones posed an immediate threat to international maritime traffic.
The latest confrontation comes as President Donald Trump's administration continues to push for a negotiated settlement to end the conflict. The war has weighed heavily on the global economy and raised concerns about worsening food insecurity in some of the world's most vulnerable regions.
In a parallel diplomatic effort, Mohsin Naqvi, Pakistan's interior minister, arrived in Iran on Saturday as part of mediation initiatives aimed at reducing tensions.
Meanwhile, Washington is also exploring ways to increase economic pressure on Tehran. According to a source familiar with the discussions, the U.S. Treasury Department is considering allowing Gulf allies to access frozen Iranian assets to help cover war-related damages.
Iran Says U.S. Military Facilities Were the Target
Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said it targeted the Ali Al Salem Air Base in Kuwait, which hosts U.S. forces, as well as the U.S. Navy's Fifth Fleet headquarters in Bahrain.
The U.S. military reported no casualties among American personnel. CENTCOM stated that its forces intercepted multiple Iranian missiles and drones aimed at Gulf allies and the Strait of Hormuz, while also striking several Iranian coastal radar and surveillance sites in response.
The latest exchange highlights the continuing volatility of the conflict and raises fresh concerns about the stability of the ceasefire. Heightened tensions around the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's most critical energy shipping routes, could have significant implications for global energy markets and international trade.
