Russian missile and drone strikes on Ukraine have killed at least six people in Kyiv and two others in the Black Sea port city of Chornomorsk, according to local authorities. The coordinated attacks, launched early Monday, targeted residential areas, energy sites and key infrastructure, marking one of the deadliest days of Russian strikes in recent weeks.

Officials in Kyiv said several explosions rocked the city shortly after dawn as air defence units attempted to intercept incoming missiles. Residential buildings in two districts suffered severe damage, leaving dozens injured and displacing many families. Emergency responders worked through the morning to pull survivors from under collapsed structures.

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported that three of the victims died on the spot, while the remaining others succumbed to their injuries in nearby hospitals. “Russia continues to target civilians. These are war crimes,” he said in a statement.

In Chornomorsk, a coastal city in the Odesa region, two people were killed when a missile struck a storage facility near the port area. Local officials said the attack also sparked a large fire, which took several hours to bring under control.

Ukraine’s Air Force said it intercepted a number of cruise missiles and drones, but admitted that the scale of the attack overwhelmed defensive systems in some regions. “Russia launched a complex, multi-vector strike. Not all threats could be neutralized,” the military said.

The latest escalation comes amid increasing concerns about Ukraine's energy security as winter approaches. Several power substations were hit, resulting in temporary outages in parts of Kyiv and Odesa.

International reactions poured in, with European leaders condemning the strikes as “brutal” and “intentionally aimed at civilians.” The United Nations urged restraint and called for renewed diplomatic efforts to prevent further escalation.

Despite the damage, Ukrainian officials vowed resilience. “We will rebuild. Every attack only strengthens our determination,” President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said.
