Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum has filed a criminal complaint after being groped by a man while greeting supporters near the presidential palace in Mexico City. The incident, which was caught on camera, has reignited debate over women’s safety in the country.

According to Sheinbaum, a drunk man approached her, placed an arm around her shoulder, and touched her hip and chest while trying to kiss her neck. The 63-year-old president quickly pushed the man away before a member of her team intervened. The suspect was later arrested by police.

Speaking at her daily morning press briefing, Mexico’s first female president said she decided to press charges to set an example for other women.

“If I, as president, stay silent, what message does that send to millions of women? If this can happen to me, imagine what other women face every day,” Sheinbaum said.

She also announced plans to review national sexual-harassment laws, calling for tougher measures and consistent penalties across Mexico’s states.

In a social-media post, Sheinbaum noted that the incident reflects “something that many women face daily — not only in Mexico but around the world.”

Women’s rights groups have praised her decision, saying it sends a strong message that harassment and abuse must not be ignored, regardless of who the victim is.
