DARTMOUTH, Mass. — A small plane crashed along Interstate 195 in Dartmouth, Massachusetts, early Monday, sending thick smoke into the air and prompting authorities to close the major highway.
Videos shared by drivers show flames and debris scattered across the roadway, with smoke rising into the sky. At this time, it is unclear whether anyone was injured in the crash.
Massachusetts State Police said the plane may have been attempting to land at New Bedford Regional Airport. Officials noted, however, that it appears the pilot did not provide the airport with a flight plan or passenger information.
Traffic was halted in both directions on the affected stretch of I-195 while emergency responders worked at the scene.
The National Weather Service reported that a nor’easter was affecting the region at the time, bringing rain and winds of 30 to 40 mph (48 to 64 kph).
Authorities are investigating the cause of the crash and have urged drivers to avoid the area.
