“The world cannot evade responsibility for the killing of innocent Palestinians waiting for food and aid in Gaza” – EU Representative Kaja Kallas
[Athens, 22 July 2025] — Kaja Kallas, the European Union’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs, strongly condemned the killing of innocent Palestinian civilians standing in line for food and aid in Gaza, calling the act “unforgivable.”
In a message on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), she stated that she had spoken over the phone with Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar, during which she made it clear:
“The IDF (Israel Defense Forces) must stop killing people at food distribution centers.”
She also issued a warning:
“If Israel fails to uphold its commitments, all options remain on the table for us.”
Meanwhile, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said in a separate message on X:
“The images from Gaza are unbearable.”
She continued:
“Innocent civilians in Gaza have been suffering excessively for far too long. This must stop now. Israel must fulfill its commitments.”
Von der Leyen further emphasized:
“It must be ensured that humanitarian aid can enter swiftly and safely, and that international humanitarian law is strictly upheld.”
Grim Humanitarian Crisis in Gaza
Since Israel fully sealed the borders on March 2, the entry of food, fuel, and medical supplies into Gaza has been completely halted, pushing the region to the brink of famine.
Severe malnutrition is rapidly spreading, particularly among children and the sick.
Since October 2023, more than 59,000 Palestinians have been killed in ongoing Israeli attacks, the majority of whom are women and children.
Gaza’s healthcare system has collapsed, with most hospitals shut down and the territory reduced to rubble.
Legal Action at the International Level
The International Criminal Court (ICC) has already issued arrest warrants against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.
Simultaneously, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) is currently hearing a genocide case filed against Israel.
