Wonsan, North Korea | July 12, 2025 — Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated that Pyongyang has reaffirmed its clear and unequivocal support for all goals and actions related to Moscow’s special military operation. North Korea’s continued backing of the Kremlin’s stance on the war in Ukraine has once again sparked global diplomatic discussions.

Speaking at a joint press conference following a bilateral meeting with North Korean Foreign Minister Choe Son-hui in the city of Wonsan, Lavrov said:

“We discussed in detail the current situation surrounding the Ukraine crisis. Our Korean friends have once again confirmed their unwavering support for all objectives of Russia’s special military operation and for the actions of Russian leadership and armed forces.”

He further stated:

“We express our gratitude, as soldiers of the Korean People’s Army participated in the successful operation to liberate the Kursk region from Ukrainian Nazis and foreign mercenaries.”

Closer Russia–North Korea Relations

This announcement comes at a time when military and strategic cooperation between Russia and North Korea has reached new heights. Since last year, North Korea has reportedly been supplying ammunition, drone technology, and military advisors to Russia — despite widespread international sanctions, which both countries have continued to defy.

International Reactions

Analysts believe that if North Korean troop involvement is confirmed, it would mark a further internationalization of the Ukraine war. Western countries are likely to view such participation as a violation of UN principles.

With both Russia and North Korea holding firm in their respective positions, experts warn that the Ukraine war could become even more prolonged and complex.

This growing alliance essentially brings another regional military and strategic partner into Russia’s orbit — beyond China and Iran — posing a new challenge to Washington and Europe.
