Constitutional recognition of abortion in France

The French government has recognized abortion as a constitutional right in the country.

France was the first in the world to recognize abortion as a constitutional right. An amendment to the country’s constitution was introduced on Monday to include the issue of abortion. 780 lawmakers of the country voted in favor of the constitution amendment bill in parliament. And 72 legislators voted against the bill. As a result, the bill was passed by voice vote.

Lawmakers welcomed the historic moment with a standing ovation when the results of the vote were announced.

Paris will celebrate this initiative with a special event on International Women’s Day on March 8. After the bill was passed by Parliament, the Eiffel Tower in Paris lit up in a message. The message read, ‘The body is mine, the decision is mine.’
