Moscow, June 15, 2025 — Russian President Vladimir Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump held a phone conversation on Saturday that lasted over 50 minutes, with the focus primarily on the escalating tensions in the Middle East and the latest developments in the Ukraine peace negotiations, according to Putin’s foreign policy advisor Yuri Ushakov.
During the discussion, President Putin briefed Trump on his recent meetings with leaders of Iran and Israel and reiterated Russia’s proposal to find a “mutually acceptable solution” regarding Iran’s nuclear issue.
Ushakov stated, “The dangerously escalating situation in the Middle East was the core topic of this exchange. President Putin condemned the military action against Iran and expressed deep concern over the potential for the conflict to intensify.” He warned, “It could lead to unforeseen consequences for the entire region.”
Putin emphasized that Russia is ready to mediate in any potential negotiations and has proposed “mutually acceptable steps” aimed at restarting talks over the Iranian nuclear deal.
“Russia’s commitment to peaceful resolution and principled diplomacy remains unchanged,” Ushakov added.
While Trump described the Middle East situation as “extremely concerning,” he also acknowledged the “effectiveness” of Israel’s strikes on Iran, according to Ushakov. Both leaders did not rule out the possibility of renewed discussions regarding Iran’s nuclear program.
During the call, Putin also updated Trump on the progress of the Russia-Ukraine peace negotiations, particularly agreements made in Istanbul, which include prisoner exchanges.
“Our President informed that prisoner exchanges are ongoing, involving severely wounded individuals and combatants under the age of 25,” said Ushakov.
Trump reportedly expressed his interest in a swift resolution to the Russia-Ukraine war.
