Trump Announces 'Zero Tolerance' Policy to Curb Mexican Gang Violence in Los Angeles

[Washington, June 9, 2025] — Following violent protests on Sunday against President Donald Trump’s immigration policy, the National Guard has been deployed across Los Angeles in large numbers.

Another protest was called on Sunday at Los Angeles City Hall in response to recent Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids. Ignoring objections from California Governor Gavin Newsom, President Trump ordered the deployment of 2,000 National Guard troops. Governor Newsom stated that Trump “wants to put on a show.”

According to the U.S. Northern Command, around 300 troops were quickly stationed at three locations across the Los Angeles metropolitan area “to ensure the safety and security of federal property and personnel.” The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) reported that their officers were also deployed in protest zones.

In a social media post, the LAPD stated:
“Every citizen has the right to peacefully express their opinions. However, the destruction of property or attempts to seriously harm federal or LAPD officers can never be considered part of a peaceful protest.”

White House Warning: 'Zero Tolerance' Policy

President Trump said on social media Sunday, “These radical left-wing protests, often led and funded by agitators, will not be tolerated.”
Trump and his administration harshly criticized Governor Newsom, Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, and other Democratic leaders for “failing to control the unrest.”

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said Trump had signed a memorandum a day earlier authorizing the deployment of the Guard “to address this unlawful situation that has been neglected for far too long.”

She added, “The Trump administration follows a ‘zero tolerance’ policy against any form of criminal activity, including violence against law enforcement.”

Protests Spread Across Los Angeles

On Saturday, a major protest erupted in Paramount City, about 15 miles south of downtown Los Angeles. Immigration officials arrested at least 44 individuals there on charges of illegal immigration. Protests then spread to various other parts of Los Angeles.

Police responded with tear gas, pepper spray, and flashbang concussion grenades to control the situation.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security reported that some protesters threw large chunks of concrete at officers, slashed tires, and vandalized buildings with graffiti.

Summary:
Protests in Los Angeles have intensified over Trump’s immigration policy and recent ICE crackdowns. The federal government's decision to deploy troops aims to contain the unrest, but objections from state officials and clashes with Democratic leaders are further complicating the situation.
