New Delhi, June 8, 2025 – In the aftermath of recent India-Pakistan clashes, India and the United Kingdom discussed expanding their cooperation on counter-terrorism efforts on Saturday. British Foreign Secretary David Lammy made the remarks to Reuters following his meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Lammy is the first high-level Western official to visit both India and Pakistan since the ceasefire that followed what was described as the most intense confrontation between the two neighbors in the past 30 years.

The recent tensions began in April when 26 men were killed in India’s Kashmir region. India blamed Pakistan-backed “terrorists” for the incident, a claim Islamabad denied. In response, India launched strikes on what it described as “terror infrastructure” inside Pakistan, triggering clashes between the two sides that culminated in a ceasefire on May 10.

In an interview at the British High Commissioner’s residence in New Delhi, Lammy said,
“We want the situation to remain stable, but of course we acknowledge its fragility—especially in a context where terrorism is deployed to undermine India’s stability.”

He added,
“We are keen to continue working with our Indian partners on counter-terrorism initiatives.”
Lammy said he had discussed the matter with both Prime Minister Modi and Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar, though he did not reveal specific details.

Last year, India and the UK held talks on combating terror financing, enhancing cooperation between law enforcement and judicial bodies, and sharing intelligence.

Lammy also said he discussed strengthening trade relations between the two nations. Earlier this month, India and the UK concluded negotiations on a free trade agreement.

He added,
“I know Prime Minister Keir Starmer is planning to visit India very soon to sign the free trade agreement. There remains tremendous opportunity for our two nations to work together.”
