"Elon Musk Hints at New Political Party, Breaking Away from President Donald Trump"
This week, billionaire Elon Musk publicly hinted at the formation of a new political party — a move that could further intensify his rift with former ally, President Donald Trump.
Musk first floated the idea on Thursday. Alongside taking jabs at Trump, he launched a poll on X to his 220 million followers, asking:
"Is it time to create a new political party in the USA that actually represents the 80% of people in the middle?"
The next day, Friday, Musk reported that 80% of respondents supported the idea.
"It is destiny," he wrote Friday evening.
He then endorsed a follower’s suggestion to name the new party "The America Party" — a name that closely resembles "America PAC," the political action committee Musk founded last year. Through that PAC, he spent $239 million backing Trump and other Republican candidates in the 2024 election.
However, forming a new political party is not easy. The Democratic and Republican parties, along with a few major third parties, already enjoy ballot access in nearly every state. For a new party to compete, it would have to navigate complex, state-by-state legal hurdles to get on the ballot.
It’s still unclear whether Musk truly intends to sever all ties with the Republican Party. On Friday, he replied "Ok" to a commenter who suggested that "the most effective use of your money is still participating in GOP primaries." Musk also responded "Hmm" to a separate post arguing that instead of forming a new party, it would be better to "reform an existing major party from within."
Last month, Musk had claimed he was scaling back his political spending, saying he felt "there’s no rational reason to pour money into politics." Yet he hasn’t ruled out getting involved again in the future. Notably, just last week, Musk also stepped down from overseeing the Trump administration’s “Office of Government Efficiency,” despite public praise from Trump.
On Tuesday, Musk launched a direct attack on Trump. He labeled Trump’s flagship domestic policy bill, the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act,” as “perverted and disgusting,” urging lawmakers to vote against it. By Thursday, the two were publicly trading barbs — Trump threatened to cut off subsidies to Musk’s companies, while Musk fired back, accusing Trump of showing no gratitude for the hundreds of millions he donated to Trump’s 2024 campaign.
This drama is unfolding as the Republican Party navigates its own internal crisis. The party’s domestic policy bill barely passed the House last month and still awaits Senate approval — where any amendments could send it back to the House again.
Against this backdrop, Musk delivered a sharp message to Republican lawmakers on Thursday:
"Trump only has 3.5 years left as President, but I’ll be around for more than 40 years."
