French President Emmanuel Macron and Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen—whose country includes Greenland as a part—will visit the autonomous territory on June 15, Frederiksen’s office announced on Saturday.

Jens-Frederik Nielsen, the parliamentary leader of Greenland, stated that alongside Macron and Frederiksen, discussions will take place on North Atlantic security, as well as economic development, climate change, and energy issues.

In a statement, Frederiksen said, “The significant support we have received from the international community for our kingdom and Greenland over the past few months is truly encouraging.” She described Macron’s visit as “another concrete demonstration of European unity.”

Since returning to the White House during his previous term, President Donald Trump had repeatedly expressed interest in purchasing Greenland, though Denmark firmly rejected the idea.

Greenland has been a part of Denmark since the 18th century and gained self-governing status in 1979.

Situated between the Arctic and Atlantic Oceans, Greenland is rich in mineral resources and holds strategic importance.

Both Denmark and Greenland have rejected any proposal to sell the territory. In a survey conducted this January, 85% of Greenlanders opposed joining the United States.

In March, Greenland’s Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen called on European nations to stand with Greenland and to clearly declare that “this territory is not for sale, and never will be.” He added, “Greenland is governed by Greenlanders, and that will never change.”
