Jordan made history by qualifying for the FIFA World Cup final stage for the first time ever, following a commanding 3-0 victory over Oman. Celebrations erupted across the country, especially in the capital Amman, starting Thursday night and continuing into Friday.
Fans celebrated with car horns, national flags, and chanting slogans in the streets. A drone show lit up the sky with messages like:
“We are all with you!”
and
“Heroes, it’s getting closer!”
The 2026 FIFA World Cup will be hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada. Jordan secured their place during the final stages of the Asian qualifiers. Star forward Ali Olwan scored a hat-trick for Jordan, the 2023 AFC Asian Cup runners-up.
On the same day, South Korea defeated Iraq 2-0, a result that also played a crucial role in helping Jordan qualify.
Photos released by the Royal Palace showed King Abdullah II, currently on a visit to London, watching the match wearing the national team jersey. He posted on social media:
“Heartfelt congratulations to our beloved people on the national team’s qualification to the World Cup finals. This historic achievement is a source of pride for us all.”
He also extended special thanks to the players, coaches, and fans.
Jordan’s World Cup Qualification: “The Time Had Come”
Sohad Idrisi, a 48-year-old homemaker, said:
“Today’s joy is like Eid — combined with Nashama’s (the team’s nickname) qualification to the World Cup.”
Fadi Kalanji, a 21-year-old university student, said:
“It feels like a dream come true. The team played brilliantly.”
Osama Al-Sharida, a 60-year-old retired official, remarked:
“I’ve been following Jordanian football since 1978. This is not only a moment of pride for Jordan, but for the entire Arab world.”
Nashat Badr, a 55-year-old teacher, added:
“We’ve been waiting for this moment for a long time. The time had come.”
Uzbekistan Also Qualifies for First World Cup
Finishing second behind Iran in Group A, Uzbekistan also qualified for the first time. A goalless draw against the UAE was enough to seal their spot.
The Uzbek squad includes players from top European clubs, such as Roma forward Eldor Shomurodov and Manchester City defender Abdukodir Khusanov.
Jordan’s most recognized player is Mousa Tamari, a winger for French club Rennes.
Palestine and Indonesia Still in the Playoff Race
Palestine kept their World Cup hopes alive with a 2-0 win over Kuwait, moving up to fifth place in Group B, just one point behind fourth-placed Oman.
If Palestine defeats Oman next Tuesday in Amman, they will move to fourth place and qualify for the playoff round.
In the qualification system, the third and fourth-place teams in each group go to playoffs, while the fifth and sixth are eliminated.
Meanwhile, Indonesia also kept their dream alive by defeating China 1-0, placing them fourth in Group C, and still in contention for their second-ever World Cup appearance.
