The Hague, Netherlands –
Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof has resigned following the collapse of the country’s four-party coalition government, and a snap national election has been scheduled for October 29, 2025. Acting Interior Minister Judith Uitermark confirmed the decision on X (formerly Twitter) on Friday.
The election announcement comes just 11 months after the formation of the ruling coalition, which had been established in November 2023 and included the far-right Freedom Party (PVV), the centre-right VVD, the Farmers’ Movement (BBB), and the centrist NSC. However, the government unraveled due to deep internal disagreements over immigration policy.
Immigration Plan Sparks Collapse
PVV leader Geert Wilders recently introduced a 10-point hardline immigration plan, which included deploying military forces at the borders and forcibly deporting asylum seekers. Wilders warned:
“If strict immigration policies are not implemented, PVV will withdraw from the cabinet.”
Shortly afterward, during an emergency meeting, PVV ministers resigned within minutes, leading to the fall of the coalition and prompting Prime Minister Schoof to officially announce the government's resignation.
Political Unrest and Strong Reactions
VVD leader Dilan Yeşilgöz criticized Wilders’ decision as “extremely irresponsible.” She told reporters:
“This morning, the Prime Minister informed us that we are facing major international challenges, including war and economic uncertainty. At such a time, collapsing the government is a terrible mistake.”
Caretaker Government and Election Timeline
Dick Schoof will continue to serve in a caretaker role until the next government is formed.
The Dutch Electoral Council had earlier recommended October 29 for elections, given that Parliament will be on summer recess from July 4 to September 1, followed by the official campaign period.
International Implications
Despite the political instability, Foreign Minister Caspar Veldkamp assured that the Netherlands remains committed to its international responsibilities, including hosting the upcoming NATO summit.
In a statement, Prime Minister Schoof said:
“I want the government to maintain control over key issues in the coming months—particularly support for Ukraine, and matters of national defense and security.”
He also issued a warning:
“A potential global trade war sparked by Donald Trump’s second term could have direct consequences on our economy. The government must remain economically proactive.”
