Former U.S. President Bill Clinton has harshly criticized President Donald Trump for his aggressive actions against the American legal system, stating that many people see his conduct as “against American values”, and ultimately, the people will hold him accountable.
In an interview on CBS’s Sunday Morning, Clinton said:
“In my lifetime, I’ve never seen anything like this — someone saying, ‘What I want should be the law of the land. It’s my way or no way.’ But most Americans don’t agree with that mindset.”
He added:
“I believe Trump is paying a price for this kind of behavior — calling people names, abusing power. It has made him unpopular.”
Clinton further stated that if Democrats win back key governorships this year and regain control of the House of Representatives in 2026, opposition to Trump will grow even stronger.
“Only elections can change this situation,” he said. “But I think the courts are waking up. The way Trump is blocking dissenting lawyers or law firms from entering public buildings — that’s not America. We’ve never done that. The legal system exists to ensure both sides are heard.”
He emphasized that so far, the courts have been stopping Trump — even judges he himself appointed.
According to Clinton, Trump is looking for ways to defy court orders, but:
“That will be very difficult for him. And if he tries, it will hurt him even more.”
Is Democratic Unity Based Solely on Anti-Trump Sentiment?
When asked whether the only thing uniting Democrats is opposition to Trump, Clinton responded:
“If I thought that were true, I’d admit it. But I don’t believe that. Critics who say so don’t understand how hard it is to make the right decisions. It’s far more complex than that.”
He continued:
“Elections will happen. Time will tell. Then we’ll see.”
Clinton concluded by addressing the need for national unity:
“President Trump is doing what he thinks is right — that’s his right. The courts are doing their job. More elections will come. But someone has to stand up and say, ‘Look, what unites us is far more important. We can’t destroy our national legacy. We can’t let others destroy our faith in one another. We have to protect that and work together — and it’s not right to insult someone just to win.’ We need to calm down and bring people back together.”
