Singapore, May 31, 2025:
French President Emmanuel Macron has warned that if the United States and European countries fail to bring an end to the wars in Ukraine and Gaza, they risk completely losing their credibility in upholding global security.

In a speech at the Shangri-La Dialogue, Macron stated,

“The greatest global threat today is the growing divide between the United States and China.”
He called for a new strategic partnership between Paris and the Indo-Pacific region.

The summit was attended by world leaders, diplomats, and military officials. U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth also addressed the conference, where key topics included Chinese aggression, the impact of the war in Ukraine, and ongoing conflicts in Asia and the Middle East.

Macron posed a pointed question:

“If Russia is allowed to seize Ukrainian territory without consequence, what will happen in the case of Taiwan? Or if something similar occurs in the Philippines, what will we do?”

He continued,

“The question is—can we still uphold territorial integrity and sovereignty under international law? Our collective credibility hinges on the answer to that question.”

He emphasized unequivocally:

Double standards are no longer acceptable.

China claims Taiwan as its own province and has recently intensified military exercises to reinforce that claim. Beijing has stated that it will use force if necessary to bring the island under its control.

U.S. Defense Secretary Hegseth remarked that China’s threat is real and imminent, adding that any aggression toward Taiwan would have “horrific” consequences.

Macron further noted that building strong resistance in the Indo-Pacific depends on how the global community responds to major issues like climate change and Israel’s military actions in Gaza.

He stated clearly:

“If Israel is given a free pass, the Western world will lose its credibility.”

“We condemn terrorist attacks, yes—but if we respond indiscriminately, we undermine our own credibility,” Macron said.

Ahead of a UN-led roadmap conference on the two-state solution, France has made its stance clear by signaling support for recognizing a Palestinian state. Macron warned:

“If Israel does not respond to the humanitarian crisis within the next few hours, the European Union’s position will become significantly tougher.”

Meanwhile, Israel’s Foreign Ministry dismissed Macron’s comments as “uninformed” and “detached from reality.”

Last week, under international pressure, Israel partially lifted its 11-week blockade on humanitarian aid to Gaza. However, the United Nations did not endorse the move, and many have described the measure as “ineffective.”

Israel has denied the existence of any ongoing blockade, claiming that nearly 900 aid trucks entered Gaza last week, delivering two million meals and thousands of aid packages through a new U.S.-supported system.

In response to Macron’s criticism, Israel said:

“Instead of putting pressure on jihadist terrorists, Macron now wants to reward them with a state.”
