[Jakarta, May 28, 2025] — Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto announced on Wednesday (May 28) that Indonesia is prepared to recognize Israel and establish diplomatic relations if Israel recognizes an independent Palestinian state. He made the remarks during a joint press conference following a meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron.
Indonesia, the world's most populous Muslim-majority nation, currently maintains no formal diplomatic relations with Israel and has long supported a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
President Subianto stated:
"On several occasions, I have said that Indonesia believes the freedom of Palestine and the two-state solution are the only true path to achieving lasting peace."
He further emphasized:
"We must also acknowledge Israel's right to sovereignty and guarantee its security — this is something I have strongly asserted."
Subianto reiterated:
"If Israel recognizes Palestine, Indonesia is ready to recognize Israel and establish diplomatic relations."
In a joint statement, Indonesia and France called for advancing the peace process between Israel and Palestine based on mutual recognition. Both countries will co-host an international conference in Paris next month, aimed at revitalizing the two-state solution.
The statement read:
"This conference will pave the way for a political solution that will lead to the establishment of a Palestinian state and launch an irreversible process of mutual recognition between Israel and Palestine."
Public support for Palestinian statehood remains extremely strong in Indonesia and is often expressed through mass rallies and protests. In 2023, when prominent Indonesian politicians demanded Israel’s exclusion from a football tournament, FIFA revoked Indonesia's hosting rights for the Under-20 World Cup.
