As the humanitarian crisis in Gaza intensifies, leaders of Germany and Finland have called on the international community to immediately pressure Israel to allow the entry of aid into the region. Meanwhile, Sweden has protested the obstruction of aid delivery to Gaza by summoning the Israeli ambassador.
At a joint press conference in Helsinki, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz stated:
"We must pressure Israel to ensure that aid reaches its proper destination."
He described the situation in Gaza as "extremely horrific" and urged swift action.
Merz further added,
"However, it is also important that Hamas does not block the delivery of aid."
The day before, on Monday, speaking at a forum hosted by German television station WDR, Merz issued a rare sharp criticism of Israel.
He said:
"I no longer understand what exactly the Israeli military intends to do in Gaza or what their objectives are. The impact on ordinary people is no longer justifiable in any way."
Finland’s Prime Minister Petteri Orpo echoed a similar tone:
"What is happening in Gaza is a terrible humanitarian disaster. Urgent action from the international community is necessary."
Sweden’s Strong Message
Meanwhile, Sweden’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced in a statement that it has summoned the Israeli ambassador to protest the blocking of humanitarian aid to Gaza.
The statement said:
"The manner in which the war is being conducted is unacceptable."
However, Sweden also acknowledged Israel’s right to self-defense.
The ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict has caused severe shortages of food and medicine in Gaza. The United Nations and various international organizations have described the situation in Gaza as a humanitarian disaster. Israel claims it is combating terrorism; however, critics argue that numerous innocent civilians’ lives and basic rights are being severely affected.
