President Donald Trump announced Sunday that the deadline for imposing a 50% tariff on European Union (EU) goods has been postponed from June 1 to July 9, allowing more time for ongoing negotiations between the United States and the EU.

The decision came after a phone call on Sunday with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. According to Trump, von der Leyen told him she “wants to enter into serious discussions.”

“I told them what needs to be done, and they have to do it,” Trump told reporters in Morristown, New Jersey, as he was returning to Washington. He added that von der Leyen assured him they would “quickly come together and try to work something out.”

On Friday, Trump had warned in a social media post that he was preparing to impose a 50% tariff on EU goods, accusing the 27-member bloc of being “very tough on trade” and making no progress in negotiations. The tariff was originally set to take effect on June 1.

That announcement, along with the threat of potential tariffs on Apple products, triggered a sharp drop in the stock market on Friday.

“When the market thought the worst of the tariff wars was over, President Trump suddenly threatened a 50% tariff on the European Union starting June 1, and possibly a 25% tariff on foreign-manufactured iPhones. This might be a negotiating tactic, but such volatility is not good for global growth or the markets,” said Klaus Baader, an analyst at SG Securities, in a report to investors.

However, the phone call with von der Leyen appears to have calmed tensions — at least for now.

“I agreed to extend the deadline — July 9, 2025 — and I’m honored to do so,” Trump wrote on Truth Social shortly after speaking with reporters Sunday evening.

For her part, von der Leyen stated that Europe and the United States “share the world’s most important and closest trade relationship.”

“Europe is ready to move forward quickly and decisively in negotiations,” she said. “We need until July 9 to reach a good agreement.”
