A nuclear war between Pakistan and India would be “foolish,” as it is a path that could lead to “mutual destruction” for both countries — according to Lieutenant General Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry, Director General of Pakistan’s Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR).
He stated, “A nuclear war is an unimaginable and irrational idea.”
In an interview with the BBC following recent tensions between the two nations, the ISPR chief emphasized that Pakistan desires peace. However, he warned that Pakistan is always prepared for war if it is imposed upon them. He noted that both India and Pakistan are nuclear powers, and a military conflict between them would be “utter foolishness. It’s unimaginable. It’s an irrational concept.”
“But as you can see,” he continued, “India has been trying to create a situation for quite some time now that might lead to military conflict. The entire world now knows that India’s initial position has been baseless from day one. This narrative resurfaces every few years. The truth is, India is playing with fire.”
He also stressed that Pakistan has shown “immense maturity” in responding to the recent provocations and has prevented further escalation.
Regarding extremist incidents in India, he stated that if there is any evidence of Pakistani involvement, “they should present that evidence. We will take action ourselves.”
The latest flare-up occurred after an attack in Pahalgam, in Indian-administered Kashmir. On the night between the 6th and 7th of this month, India conducted airstrikes on several locations inside Pakistan, claiming the targets were “terrorist camps.”
Pakistan responded with retaliatory airstrikes, and eventually, both nations agreed to a ceasefire.
