Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has expressed gratitude to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan for Turkey's ongoing diplomatic efforts to end the Ukraine-Russia conflict.

A statement released by the Prime Minister’s office in Italy said that the two leaders spoke on the phone on Tuesday evening and discussed the current conflict situation and the prospects for peace.

The statement said, "In light of Turkey’s announcement of preparations to host peace talks between Ukraine and Russia in Istanbul, the two leaders discussed diplomatic possibilities and reaffirmed their support for a just and lasting peace in Ukraine."

The statement also recognized Turkey's role in encouraging a diplomatic solution based on dialogue.

It further said, "Prime Minister Meloni thanked President Erdoğan for his efforts to resolve the conflict based on compromise. She reiterated that, while Ukraine has responded positively, Russia should also respond positively to the call for high-level discussions and fully and unconditionally agree to a 30-day ceasefire, which would demonstrate a real interest in peace."

This diplomatic initiative is seen as the latest effort to end the war that began in early 2022.

Russian President Vladimir Putin proposed direct talks with Ukraine on Sunday, which has the support of Turkey and the United States.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed his participation in the talks in Turkey.

Putin has not yet confirmed his participation. Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump said on Monday that he might travel to Istanbul for talks if he believes it is necessary.

Even if Trump does not participate, his special envoys, Keith Kellogg and Steve Witkoff, are expected to take part in the discussions.
