Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced that India has been “given a lesson” in respecting the sovereignty of its neighbor. This statement came in response to a wave of deadly violence along the border, after which the Pakistan military launched a counter-operation dubbed “Operation Bunyan‑e‑Marsus.”
In a statement to Geo News on May 13, Prime Minister Sharif expressed deep sorrow over the killing of 40 innocent civilians—including women and children—as a result of Indian aggression.
He said, “The nation’s martyrs will never be forgotten.” He prayed for the souls of the deceased and extended his condolences to the bereaved families.
The prime minister assured that the government stands with the families of the martyrs and that a special assistance package has already been announced for them. “We will not abandon them,” he promised.
Regarding the military confrontation, the prime minister stated, “India now understands that the sovereignty and territorial integrity of regional states must be respected.” Praising the Pakistani Armed Forces, he remarked, “They have shattered the myth of Indian superiority,” noting that Pakistan’s response demonstrated the country’s capability for self‑defense.
He added, “We are a peace‑loving nation, but we know how to respond to aggression, and Operation Bunyan‑e‑Marsus is undeniable proof of that.”
Earlier the same day, the Inter‑Services Public Relations (ISPR), the media wing of the Pakistan military, confirmed that 11 Pakistani soldiers were killed and 78 were injured in what it described as an “instigative and condemnable” Indian attack. It also reported that 40 civilians—including seven women and 15 children—were killed and another 121 were injured.
The ISPR stated that under “Operation Marka‑e‑Haq,” as part of Operation Bunyan‑e‑Marsus, the Pakistan Armed Forces carried out “precise and high‑level retaliatory strikes.”
“No ambiguity remains: if anyone again attempts to challenge Pakistan’s sovereignty or territorial integrity, the response will be prompt, full‑scale, and final,” the ISPR declared, paying tribute to the fallen soldiers and civilians and wishing the wounded a speedy recovery.
The recent clashes between India and Pakistan began on April 22, when an attack in Pahalgam in Indian‑administered Kashmir killed 26 civilians. India blamed Pakistan‑based militants for the assault, an allegation Islamabad vehemently denied. The incident was followed by cross‑border air strikes and missile exchanges, dramatically raising military tensions.
The conflict alarmed the international community and ultimately led to a U.S.‑brokered ceasefire. However, although the violence subsided, tensions between the two countries remain at a high level, with both sides steadfast in their demands for sovereignty and security.
