President Donald Trump is set to visit three key Persian Gulf nations—Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and Qatar—on his first major foreign trip in his second term. The main objective of this tour is to strengthen U.S. investments, defense cooperation, and strategic partnerships.
A Shift in Strategy with a New Message
Unlike the Biden administration, Trump has chosen a completely different path. While Biden sought to isolate Saudi Arabia following the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi, Trump is now moving forward with commercial ties and nuclear cooperation with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.
White House Press Secretary Caroline Leavitt stated, “Trade and cultural exchange are essential for combating extremism and ensuring regional stability.” The Trump administration views this visit as a step toward forming a new 21st-century security-economic bloc.
$600 Billion Deal in Saudi Arabia
Saudi Arabia has already signed a $600 billion investment deal with the U.S., covering arms purchases, artificial intelligence, technology transfer, and stock market development. Trump believes the total could exceed one trillion dollars. He claims, “This investment will create 2 million jobs in the United States.”
UAE: Trump’s Pledge to Counter China’s Influence in AI
The UAE aims to lead the global AI market by 2030. It has pledged $1.4 trillion in U.S. investments toward that goal. Trump has promised not to impose export restrictions on AI, as Biden did, and instead pledged to protect Middle Eastern allies from Chinese influence.
Qatar: Diplomatic Balance and Military Base
Qatar has already impressed Trump by allowing the use of a royal Boeing 747-8 aircraft for his visit, which will serve as Air Force One during the trip. Qatar also hosts the key U.S. military base at Al-Udeid.
Itinerary:
-
Tuesday: Visit to Riyadh, U.S.-Saudi Investment Forum
-
Wednesday: GCC Summit and visit to Doha
-
Thursday: Visit to Abu Dhabi, meeting with Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed
Strategy Without Focusing on Israel
Israel is not included in this trip, as Saudi Arabia has made it clear it will not recognize Israel without visible progress toward establishing a Palestinian state. Hamas has already shown goodwill by releasing an American-Israeli hostage.
Iran Closely Watching the Visit
Iran is observing the visit with serious interest. After failing to make progress in nuclear talks in Oman, it has undertaken diplomatic visits to Saudi Arabia and Qatar. However, analysts believe the Trump-Saudi-UAE-Qatar alliance will play a key role in countering the regional influence of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).
