Washington, May 10, 2025 — In a major diplomatic breakthrough, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced that India and Pakistan have agreed to begin peace talks aimed at enforcing an immediate ceasefire and addressing longstanding bilateral tensions.

In a statement posted on social media, Rubio confirmed that over the past 48 hours, he and U.S. Vice President JD Vance held extensive consultations with top officials from both countries. The discussions included Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Indian Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar, Pakistani Army Chief General Asim Munir, Indian National Security Adviser Ajit Doval, and his Pakistani counterpart Asim Malik.

Rubio praised the leadership shown by both sides:

“We commend the wisdom, foresight, and statesmanship of Prime Ministers Modi and Sharif in choosing the path of peace.”

According to Rubio, both nations have agreed to begin a comprehensive dialogue at a neutral location, focusing on a range of critical issues including border security, counterterrorism, water-sharing arrangements, and regional stability.

This initiative is being hailed as a significant step toward de-escalation in South Asia, following a period of heightened tensions and sporadic skirmishes. Analysts say that if implemented, these talks could open a new chapter in resolving decades of hostility between the two nuclear-armed neighbors.

Rubio attributed this breakthrough to active and persistent U.S. diplomatic efforts, noting that Washington remains committed to facilitating peaceful resolutions in the region.

“We hope these talks will pave the way for a sustainable peace that benefits not just India and Pakistan, but the entire South Asian region,” he added.

The exact date and venue of the proposed dialogue have not yet been disclosed, but preparations for the first round of negotiations are reportedly underway.
